The Sun Shines in Lydiard Millicent

Written 02/09/09

As I write this it has been a good day for many reasons, England won the Ashes, the Summer made a brief reappearance and I have just enjoyed a pint of 6X in my local. With the subject of ale in mind I thought it was time to rejoice in the fact that The Sun is once again shining brightly.

Opening a pub in the current climate takes a certain nerve and I would imagine that all involved have had a few restless nights over the past weeks. Nevertheless, this is not a casual venture and our patron, Mr Howard Taylor (yes he of Heart FM fame) is already an experienced publican and runs The Steam Railway Company, one of the most successful bars in Old Town, Swindon.

Getting the building ready for trade has taken a big push and you can't have missed the frenetic activity that has engulfed the site recently which has been expertly coordinated by Maria, manager of The Steam Railway Company. Picking up the reigns from Maria is Jim and Hilary who together will manage the venture. Over a pint, I spent some time talking with the couple to find out a little more about their background and ambitions for The Sun.

Jim & Hiliary, The Sun

Leading the culinary experience is Head Chef Jim who has been involved with catering since his career began as a butcher in Hastings. Jims last posting was with the De Vere hotel at Shaw Ridge where for 14 months he has continued to refine his art. "The Sun is the perfect venue for a relaxed and friendly dining experience. We place great emphasis on using fresh ingredients, offering wholesome homemade dishes and delivering it all at a fair price" said Jim.

Driving the bar side operations is Hillary who has worked in the events and catering sector and has formerly co-managed a successful Mexican restaurant in Swindon alongside Jim. As a degree educated multi-linguist Hilary remains ready to welcome all but can offer a little more assistance for those restricted to French or Spanish............. Vous vendez tapas?

"The Sun has something for everyone, great beer, great food and a great atmosphere. Jim and I are so excited to once again be working together and we look forward to welcoming everyone from all walks of life." said Hilliary.

Over the coming months I expect we will all learn a lot more about Jim and Hilary and look forward their undoubted success in transforming the fortunes of The Sun.

However, like all great establishments it does not run on steam (that's the other pub in Old Town) and requires the support of the community. So, it's over to you................
